The following are two loads that shot well at 50 yards during my initial load development:

AR15 with CLE 20" barrel (1:7 rifling, wylde chamber, bull barrel)

1) 64gr Nosler bonded, 25.0gr H4895, remington 7 1/2 primer, 2.18" C.O.L., ~ 2946fps muzzle velocity based upon chronograph data at 15ft

~0.3" 5 shot group at 50yards

2) 64gr Nosler bonded, 25.6gr (compressed load, 5.56 pressure) H4895, remington 7 1/2 primer, 2.18" C.O.L., ~3026fps muzzle velocity based upon chronograph data at 15ft

~0.5" 5 shot group at 50yards

The bullet itself is capable of fine accuracy, MOA or better with tuned handloads shot out of a quality barrel.

Now that I have the two accurate loads initially established, i'll make some more of each and try 100 yard, 10 shot groups for confirmation. Since the effective range of this bullet is limited significantly by it's poor Ballistic Coefficient, I believe either would work well within 200yards, a reasonable upper limit for hunting and/or defensive purposes.

The velocities written on the targets were initial estimates based upon a 15' distance to chronograph but with the incorrect Ballistic Coefficient(B.C.). The velocities listed above are more accurate because theh utilized a more realistic B.C.. See below for more details.

Based upon my experience with several other .223 and 5.56mm loads, I would expect velocity from a 16" barrel to be about 4% less (120fps). If this trend holds true, and given velocity data for Winchester's RA556B factory load that was posted by LEID on AR15.com (2829fps w/16" barrel), then I believe that the 25.0gr h4895 load closely duplicates the factory RA556B loading.

Also note that i regressed the actual B.C. of the Nosler bullet at 0.175 vs. 0.231 advertised. I did this by measuring the difference in muzzle velocity vs. velocity at 50 yards (laser ranged) as measured with a chronograph; 1) 5 shot average taken at 15' then converted to muzzle velocity and 2) 5 shot average at 50 yards (chronograph at 50yards). i then used adjusted the B.C. in a ballistics program until it matched my data. My B.C. aligns well with the velocities listed on Winchester's RA556B box so I believe it's much more realistic than Nosler's value. Bad news is that it's much worse than advertised. Never trust a bullet manufacturers data on face value.

UPDATE: PERFORMED SAME EXPERIMENT BUT AT100 YARDS. B.C. WAS 0.195. SEE UPDATES LATER IN THREAD.

Note that the 2280fps bullet is representative of the 25.6gr load at ~150-155 yards based upon the 'real' B.C.. The bullet slows down very fast! Bullet weights are 56.1gr (.462" widest point, .434" narrowest point) and 63.3gr (.464" widest point, .395" narrowest point).

Wow, thanks for the report. This is a great bullet, one of the best for a 556 available.

I figure it is a 300-350 yard expansion from a 20 inch.

You have an accurate load so you might try to chronograph at 200 yards. I did that with some 450 grain .458 North Forks and got much higher results than at 50 yards. I have not tried the 64 grain for velocity loss like you have though.

It will probably expand down to 1800 fps which is much farther than most defensive scenarios, or a judge and jury, would tolerate!

I have shot coyotes with it out to about 200 yards from a 20 inch and similar velkocity to yours, and it puts them right down even though it is a controlled expansion bullet.

I loose about 110 fps from 20 inch to 16 inch.

Yes, I was pleasantly surprised at the accuracy capability of this bullet with tuned handloads. It's construction is robust and would provide excellent barrier (or hunting) performance. It's only downside is the B.C.

I'd probably limit this bullet to 200yards for hunting w/20" barrel (175yards with 16" barrel) assuming decent expansion still occurs at ~2000fps. I'm going to try the 25.0gr h4895 load at 200 yards (~2011fps estimated) and 250yards (1809fps estimated) for expansion into water next time. That'll tell the story for me.

Just curious, what was your load and velocity from a 20" barrel ?
 
That has to be gratifying--fine accuracy and excellent bullet integrity. What's not to like.
 
What do you think the minimum twist that is needed to stabilize this bullet? I've got a 222 Rem that I'd try it in if it would stabilize in a 1-14"
 
I had good accuracy when shooting the 64 bonded at 200yds in my semi-custom .223. Good enough that I decided to take a 300yd shot at a hanging bowling pin. The pin was hit dead center and actually caught the bullet with only 1/3 of the bullet penetrating the pin. There was minimal expansion.

I am using CFE223 with remington 7 1/2 primer, WW brass, and 27.1 grains powder. this gives me average of 2912 fps in 16 inch. About 3020 fps from 20 inch. Both 1-9 twist. Changing primer to CCI 450 resulted in much higher pressure, and I got inconsistant velocity with Winchester small rifle. so Remington 7 1/2 is the way to go with this powder and bullet. It deffinately expands on coyotes at 200 yards I can tell you!

The 64 gr BSB shot under MOA in my 22-250 with a 1:14 twist but it was moving out at 3700 fps, a tab bit faster than a 222 Rem.

Nah it's an old Western Auto Revelation Model 225.

Need to find some dies for it.
 
64gr nosler bsb at 2100fps into water. This is equivalent to the winchester ra556b load fired from a 20" barrel into water at 200yards.

BTW, per the recommendation above, I did the same exercise calculating the B.C. but this time at 100yards. I came up with .195.





 
Last week I finally got around to accuracy testing my handloads with the 64 gr BSB, 25.0 gr AA2460, 2860 fps. The rifle was a run of the mill PSA AR15, 1/7 twist, 16" barrel, which I mounted a Bushnell 3x9x40 on for testing purposes. I shot 4 different factory loads plus 2 handloads, 3 shot groups as follows:

PPU 69 gr HPBT match 2576 fps 3" group
PPU 75 gr HPBT Match 2480 fps 2" group
Nos Cust 77 gr HPBT Match 2438 fps 1.5" group
Nos Def 64 gr BSB 2667 fps 1.25" group

HL 64 gr BSB, 25.0 gr AA2460 2860 fps 1.5" group
HL 55 gr Nos HP, 25.5 gr WC846 3031 fps 2" group

as you can see, in both factory and handload form, the 64 gr BSB was the most accurate tested.

While these figures might not impress the varmit or benchrest shooter who shoots bug hole groups, I was quite happy with this performance in a standard M4 type AR15
 
100 yard group.

Not as good as my 75gr hornady load but good enough for a 200yard bonded hunting round.

By the way, this is why you should fire 10 shot groups. If I only fired 3 or 5 rounds then it may have been the 3 in the same hole in the center and give a false sense if accuracy. Still happy with 1 moa with this hunting bullet.

Have you chronographed the Winchester RA556B?

A LE freind told me it was running about 2920-2940 fps from his 16 inch.

I am surprised your H4895 load does so well. I got great velocity and low pressure with IMR 4895 but it was only doing 3 inch groups.

You have such an accurate load, is there any way you can recover a bullet in water at 200 yards rather than loading it down? I dont know if the extra rotational velocity would help it expand or not, or if BC is slightly higher than anticipated.

If I recover one at 200 I will sure let you know how it looks.
 
This CLE chambered/contoured Douglas match barrel is indeed very accurate. Much more so than a factory colt barrel. it's even better with match bullets like the 75gr hornady. i really like h4895 in .223/5.56 with heavier bullets. it really packs the case full but i get good velocity and accuracy with it. it's also very temperature insensitive which makes if very consistent in various temp conditions.

I didnt chrono RA556B but I saw other postings where its was ~2830fps in a 16" barrel. Winchester advertises 2935fps from a 20" nato barrel so i suspect this is accurate.

Also, that bullet was recovered after shooting into water buckets at 200yards. No downloading involved.

Sorry my response is so late.
I was shooting 26.0gr of CFE in a 23.5" Broughton barrel. Unfortunately, I left the Oehler home that day.

For those guys who really like the 64 Bonded, SPS seems to have an endless supply of them. I just grabbed a few more bags. :grin:
